Program Description:

General

 

helsinkiThe University of Helsinki is Finland's oldest and largest education institution and consistently ranks as one of the top research universities in the world. The Finnish education system is internationally renowned, and exchange students will experience life in the Finnish capital, Helsinki, one of the world's most liveable cities. The Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki ranks 56th in the world in law on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings  for 2018.

Finland has a long and deeply-rooted Nordic legal tradition; the university's Faculty of Law aims to produce high level legal research that provides a scientific based Nordic and European model of law emphasizing democracy, human rights, the rule of law and social law. The law school also conducts research on Chinese Law and hosts the Finish Center of Chinese Law and Chinese Legal Culture.

Exchange students can take courses in areas of law including finance, antitrust, commercial law, European law, human rights, intellectual property and criminal law.


 

Academics
 

The languages of instruction at the University of Helsinki are Finnish and Swedish, with many courses also taught in English. Please see course information below for specific courses taught in English.

Students will receive up to 12 credits towards their law degree. Only the credits and not the grades will transfer per ABA requirements. The acceptance of any credit or grade for any courses taken at the University of Helsinki, including externships and other clinical offerings, is subject to determination by the WCL, Office of the Registrar.

The Faculty of Law at the University abolished departments in 2010 and now covers a wide variety of legal disciplines as well as teaching and research in general jurisprudential studies.  The following is a selection of courses offered in English during the 2018-2019 academic year.
