Program Description:

Freie Universität Berlin is an international network university and a leading research institution founded in 1948 on the principals of freedom, justice, and truth. Since its founding, the university has maintained a large network of international partnerships and ties; approximately 18% of the university's students are international students. The university ranks 88th in the world on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018.

The Law Department of Freie Universität Berlin hosts up to 150 exchange students every year. With more than 2,700 students, it is one of the largest law departments in Germany, so students can choose from a large selection of courses in law spanning from classic to modern issues in law. The department is divided into three academic unit: Civil Law, Criminal Law, and Public Law.

The official language of instruction at the Freie Universität is German; however, the Law Department offers a small selection of English courses every semester.

Students will receive up to 12 credits towards their law degree. Only the credits and not the grades will transfer per ABA requirements. The acceptance of any credit or grade for any courses taken at the Freie Universität, including externships and other clinical offerings, is subject to determination by the AUWCL Office of the Registrar.

The following is a selection of courses offered at Freie Universität.  Please visit the University's website and the Department of Law's exchange student page for a complete list of course offerings.
